I would venture that it would depend on the manufacturer and how they choose to label a paper. Same-named finishes could vary from brand to brand.

This. One brand's semi-gloss is another brand's semi matte. Also note that "matte" RC papers are much more glossy than matte fiber papers, so there are distinct differences even within brands.Originally Posted by Pieter

In general, I find the blacks to have more depth in glossier paper, and be more black.

Ilford classifies its warmtone fiber as semi-matt, Bergger gives you a choice between semi-gloss or semi-gloss, and Oriental as glossy with the B&H filter for semi may. semi gloss. Ilford promises 7 grades of contrast, Bergger 6, and Oriental 5.
