    Arista 400 and rodinal

I have used arista 125 for ages, but just recently I bought from freestyle boxes of 4 x 5 arista 400 pro for little money.
I have always used rodinal for my development and I was wandering how this combination works.
If noone has used Arista I would be appreciative if hp5 users can express their opinion .
I will be going soon in a trip to venice and I have very little time for trials.
    Thank you in advance,
    Domenico

    Arista 400 and rodinal

I would be careful about using Rodinal to develop 400 speed film. In my experience that combination is too grainy for my tastes. I was shocked by how large the grain size was. But I should have expected this as Rodinal is a very active developer.

If it were me, I'd shoot the Arista 400 and develop it in D76/ID11. The grain isn't too large and you'd get full film speed out of it.

I agree with you that Arista 125 in Rodinal is a very nice combination. I use it at 1:50 dilution. I did try the 400 in Rodinal, same dilution, and the grain was just too much. With 4X5 film you can see the grain in an 8X10 enlargement. d-76, xtol or HC110 would be better ways to go.

You can try a 1:100 dillution but you will have a mcuh longer development time. I have not looked at any charts but my guess (for developing in a Jobo ATL at 20 degrees C and 25 rotations pm) would be around 20 - 25 minutes

    Arista 400 and rodinal

    Hi

I have developed several 400 speed films, in 120 and 4x5 in Rodinal. I always use 1+100 dilution, and have not had problems with grain (even APX400).

No doubt there are other/better combinations, but if Rodinal is what you're used to, the higher dilutions should work fine.

    Rodinal 1:25 and 400 speed non-Tgrain film?

Last time I used that combination was in 1980; I got so much grain I put on five pounds just looking at the negatives, hippies surrounded my house chanting "Granola", President Jimmie Carter added me to the Grain Embargo watch-list, and Anheuser-Busch considered starting a new faux-beer: Rodenweiser. (However, their research discovered that many an Irish photographer mistook old Rodinal for Guinness, but still found it better than American beers.)

I am very pleased with Arista.EDU ASA 400 using HC110 dil. H. BTW, this film is Foma from Checkoslovacia. I use it at the full ASA rating of 400 where as I previously use Tri-X at ASA 325.

The "standard" Arista 400 is HP5+

Both work very nicely in Ilford DD-X - 1:4 or 1:9
