Bob, I'm just curious - do you flatten PS layers before sending a copy to the printer?

Yes indeed, when this large I go to 8 bit as final stage as my printer can print in 16 or 8 bit.

    Bob,

I have the IPF 9400 as well. You should download the Canon interface that you run from Photoshop. It gives you a lot more options to bring out the full capabilities of your printer. I couldn't open the file you posted with your computers specifications but run 8GB of RAM at a minimum. More if you can. With some custom profiles it's an amazing printer.

As others have said your ability to print large files will be based on the drivers/RIP you are using. At work I have the IPF 9400, using the Canon software I have yet to find its limit, 6GB files are fine. I also have a Mimaki 54" printer, the Mimaki RIP eats everything I throw at it, I do run it on a PC with 16GB of RAM but large files simply take longer to process, they never fail.

My Fiery RIPs that run my other printers are another matter, once you get above 2GB forget it, they just fail.

Re: Super Large Files to print

Calculating the size of an 8-bit TIFF file using online calculator, I find that an 8x10 foot image sized for printing to 600 DPI is just shy of 4 gigabytes.

Are you resizing to the appropriate resolution for your printer? Sorry if this is obvious or a silly question, you obviously know what works best for you and your business, but I personally wouldn't send anything to the printer at more than twice the typical printer resolution, usually 300 or 360 DPI. When I did tests on an Epson it printed great at 300 DPI, but was maybe a tiny bit better sent at 600 DPI. Meanwhile an unresized print that the printer driver resized internally was clearly worse.

I could not see the attachment, but in a previous post you listed 4Gb of memory. That’s not a large amount in today’s world. And storage space is not the same as memory. Memory may be a factor in your problem.

Re: Super Large Files to print

I have to work on my Canon shortly and will look into this , I suspect the computer I am using is the limitation, I have a second one coming online that has much more capabilities .

FWIW I have printed 1.8 gigs with no problem, I am just being asked by a client who is working with over 7gig files and I have never gone beyond the 1.8 threshold... kind of like my computer can go warp 3 but the new enterprise can go warp 8.

In addition to the memory, which seems too low, when you say your printer supports 16 bit, have you verified that the driver you're using does as well? I.e. is the entire path 16 bit?
