A lesson for photographers from Katrina

I live in Baton Rouge, which is the eastern edge of Cajun country and about 80 miles up the Mississippi from New Orleans. The river snakes it way south from NO to Gulf, about 100 miles south of the city. One of my summer projects was to drive down to the end of the road at the Gulf and photgraph the churchs and towns along the way. I never quite got around to it, and figured I would do in the fall when it was cooler. Now the entire area is under 12 feet of water. When you thing of a good picture - go take it!

You are so correct. I was in New Orleans in July and we were staying in a hotle at the very edge of the French Market. We took my in laws to see the sights. I was getting ready to shoot with the 8x10 when I realized I had packed everything except the ball head for the tripod. Since it was a short trip I just shrugged my shoulders and figured I would come back in a month. That month may turn into a much longer time and the things that I saw will not be the same when I do go back. They never are. It's also surprising how many possible photographs there are when you do not have the ability to make any.

that's a lesson i get hit over the head with all the time. it doesn't even take a disaster to change a place forever, in subtle or in large ways.

It's probably a picture of NO under 12ft of water that would be remembered.
