I am very hard on watches so I don't wear anything expensive because it will only get scratched and banged up. I like the inexpensive Timex digital watches myself. I also always buy a metal elastic band. Real leather is fine but the metal elastic bands are faster to put on. The metal bands that clasp on only causes my watch to fly off my wrist at the worst time. Oh and don't even get me started on plastic bands that make your arm sweat and break in a week.

Timex Expedition, face lights up when I need it, and the stop watch I bought in the 70's. Both go in the field with me. The stop watch lives in my gear bag full time.

$20 casio or timex with backlit face is all you need.

Bryan I wore a mechanical pocket watch for decades. I still would but tired of the chains breaking and then the watch. I might make my own with improvements.

Like John Layton I test my silent counting. I use it all the time and check myself as John does. I recently was developing sheet film one at a time on a closet and just counted off the time.

Bob Salomon, in Jack Reacher novels Jack always knows the exact time. Perhaps a known skill.

I now try to run my days by sunrise and sunset. A pleasure for a long time night worker.

Yet I have analog clocks in every room... digital I gaff tape over the annoying things. Except in kitchen.

Haha indeed! Didn't mean to annoy Jay but I've always used my phone and didn't know if there might be a set of features I wasn't thinking about (other than the obvious - something to use to keep track of long exposure times). Say a nice trick for reciprocity failure without having to use an app.

E.g. if I didn't ask, I wouldn't have known that the DigiSix had a timer on it (I have a Sekonic 758 and don't think I'll have time to look at a DigiSix before the hike, but good to know to look at it for the future).

It would be nice to ask a question and not have to worry about getting a tart answer. If we get our questions criticized, then we don't ask them and we don't learn. The wise never look down on others.

If I were choosing a watch, it would be as simple as possible, like an analog military watch., I prefer to carry a military analog compass and map when I am out. Doesn't need batteries, nor dependent on the Geosat system and whether or not the military is degrading the accuracy, or being stuck in a canyon with no satellite signal.

Here's one that uses no batteries, and has a built in compass. And, it looks cool!

I wear a Timex Tide Temp Compass Watch T2N720 for all outdoor activity. It is waterproof and the second hand is large enough to see without my glasses. The compass is handy for guessing movement of light. The Temperature feature is great for measuring not only air temperature for hiking/camping, but water temperature when I go fly fishing. Never used the tide feature.
