    Extra Long Exposures

I've been doing a series of these for a few years now, I've posted some of em in the pinhole thread. I was wondering if anybody else in this forum does these too? I know I'm not the first, I've been really influenced by Hiroshi Sugimoto and Michael Wesely.

Here's one I made of a play I recently did the technical direction for.

    Re: Extra Long Exposures

I do long exposure with digital of daytime architecture and night time architecture as well as landscape photography. I did some with my 4x5 last year and plan on doing more this coming year. I have a 5 stop and 16 stop ND filter. The part I like about using film instead of digital for long exposure, is no thermal noise, regardless of length of exposure. Living in AZ that is a plus in Phoenix during August late afternoon. I do need a 10 stop filter as well. These will be mostly b/w. Will try some color and see how that works for one workflow I use to convert from color to black and white in the digital world. At least 2 filters, a red or green (maybe yellow) and the ND. with my 5 stop and a red filter that would be 8 stops nd with the 16 equals a 19 stop. Either of these could give me exposure times a lot longer than digital, but no noise!

    Re: Extra Long Exposures

it's been a long time since i've attempted to do this with digital. back in those days i had such an entry level dslr that i could only do a maximum exposure time of 5 seconds. film allows me to do some really long ones. Last year I set up a pinhole to shoot for 8 days. I'd actually forgotten I'd set it up haha. I thought I was gonna end up with a solargraph looking image, but actually it came out pretty good (considering).

    That is actually pretty cool.

Another aspect of long exposure with film, especially black and white is it is not as sensitive to IR I believe so would not get a colorcast that you get sometimes with a poor quality nd filter. Mine are Formatt-Hitech Firecrest so I don't have that issue. Another thing is it is probably easier to seal up the camera for light leaks than a dslr which is a sneaky bastard for keeping light out.

There are constant, shutter open film exposures for longer than 12 months! Do that with digital.

The sensor would puke and fry. Even if possible, the digital noise would be all you see. One giant firefly convention of green, red and blue!

Only two minutes, but that is extra long if you are only 10 and a half!
