    Guillotine Shutters unusual sources

I'm pretty sure I posted earlier that I'm working on another between-the-lenses guillotine shutter for a Metrogon something like the first one. It is going well. My latest includes a selective additional ƒ stop for better resolution.

BUT surfing the web for guillotine sluice damper valve brought up a lot of interesting devices for behind or before the-lens applications. Disregard the huge industrial gear; there are some lightweight alternatives waiting for tin-snips for our purposes. There are even models with an adjustable aperture, and electrical or pneumatic activation.

Dunno if this helps anyone. Just sharing.

Thanks for sharing the free association Jac.

I was always struck at how the French invented the guillotine (after Dr Guillotin) in order to execute a revolution more humanely.

Here's a more relevant version using the same principle - spring loaded execution of the image:

A modern Copal is just a developed application of the guillotine shutter idea - but notice that simple guillotine shutters were left in the bin of the history very quickly. For a good number of reasons.

You are right about history, of course, but I'm speaking of opportunities to apply economic alternatives to otherwise shutterless lenses today, and there are very many lenses which cannot possibly be converted to a conventional shutter or if they can then conversion becomes entirely cost-prohibitive. We are not all wealthy, but a lot of us are motivated, curious, inventive.

So were those who invented the guillotine shutter - and those who quickly left it in the history bin, for good reasons. Argue with them, not with me.

I will argue to the assertion you make. Mine: There are many who use lenses that cannot be adapted to your mentioned shutters. Are you going to criticize Packard shutter users next? One virtue of a proper Guillotine shutter is for between front and rear clusters where there is little clearance - and economic necessity is paramount.

Argue all you wish to the nl device

You have it all thought through. So did those who left the idea in the bin of the history. For good thought through reasons.

I do have it all thought through. Rationalizations such as yours bent to bury history make no sense to persons who use historically important or exotic lenses today. See the fork in the road, Pfsor? Choose yours and do not look back. In the end, all is good for all of us.
