the best shutters i own, the ones i never have trouble with are guillotine shutters. there is really no reason why they should be in the dustbin of history ...
the best LF cameras i have are equipt with guillotine shutters. much easier to fix, much easier to use and much less expensive then modern clockwork shutters
that tend to fail, or need a cla every few years.

It seems to me, if the purpose of a shutter is to cut off the light, a guillotine is appropriate.

Agreed, in addition there are applications in which a typical leaf or focal plane shutter won't meet the requisites such as rapid cycling, very short exposures both with high reliability.

An interesting application is to place the shutter in a lens where its Waterhouse stop is ordinarily placed.

Maybe a stupid question, but is there any other purpose?

Yes, or perhaps a slot near the aperture or Waterhouse slot as in this A. Laverne (Gasc & Charconnet) lens with guillotine shutter.

RedGreenBlue: you understand the direction, the spirit of the effort. Thanks for that!

When I referred to placing a guillotine shutter in the Waterhouse slot ever so slightly enlarged I was simply following existing applications, in particular military aerial cameras. No credit to me! It is an interesting challenge, already accomplished to insert a very thin guillotine shutter in a slot not much bigger than the Waterhouse slot. My latest includes two different apertures in the same slot.

Certainly, Jac. I would like to see your creation(s) when the time is right. What fun!

When all the crappy clocks (shutters) are broken we can DIY a guillotine. They are not making any more. Or parts.

I installed a big guillotine on a Diesel Engine, as back in the day if a Diesel ran away and started running on blowby, it was going to be a bad day. Overspeed, running on sump oil and a final seizure.

As this engine was in a tiny Lab cell it could have been. Before the guillotine was installed I used a Galli Shutter to shut the damn thing off. An aluminum clipboard.
