Many Thanks to all who have offered their expertise regarding this problem! Net-wisdom it truly appreciated!

John Cook's recommendations ring true, and I will go with his suggestions. The issue of ultra-violet (UV) exposure and the consequences is an issue I had not taken seriouosly.

    Very Best,

    Hi John

Just a thought from past experience with spar varnish. I would think that due to the relative softness of the product, on a hot day you may find your tripod legs difficult to move after use. Try a test by applying to two pieces of wood and when dry, squeeze in vice for a minute. If they do not resist separating, then no problem.

I happen to prefer my tripods with hairy legs ;-)

Danish type oils are usually primarily linseed oil. Tung oil considered a little "harder" than linseed oil. Both will work well as Matthew described. And thanks to Dan for the tip on Utah!
