Would you consider me ungracious if I suggested the lighting was perhaps a touch harsh? (Yes, sunlight tends to do that!)

John, That is a simply wonderful portrait. I wouldn't even try to gauge the difficulty of getting perfect expressions (let alone the technical stuff, like focus!) from nine people and a dog!

    Thanks, Peter!

I was planning on doing their portrait all summer and it only came around at the end of September. Originally I was going to photograph them closer to the town of Saratoga, Wyoming, where I was living for the summer with my family. But they invited me out to their ranch (they have about 5k head of cattle during the summer) for the portrait. They are about 45 minutes to an hour off the main highway on gravel roads to their ranch. Very, very isolated but breathtakingly beautiful location. In the back is Elk Mountain, the original Overland Stage Coach route passed near here, snaking its way around the mountain and across the North Platte River. This is real cowboy country.

This was shot at 1/4 second, my technique was to get their attention with my dark slide above the camera, but I also had a ranch hand holding an umbrella up to block the wind--this can be a very windy part of the country. This was the first sheet exposed, I did a second but it did not turn out.
