12" commercial ektar lever shutter release question

My shutter release plunger appears to be too short to trip the shutter, but when I turn the lever on the side of the lens (see pic) and try the cable release, it trips the shutter fine.
It will not unless I activate the lever on the side of the lens.
I think it may be for flash not sure?
Is it ok to use the lever on the side or will it mess up my exposure times. The shutter sounds fine to my ear, just want to be sure I do no harm...until I purchase a better cable release for this lens.

    Thanks!

It won't hurt anything to cock the synch lever when you want to use the cable release.
Thanks, but I'd rather just watch:
