Digital printing question -- can anyone help?

Hi guys, I know this is off-topic but please bear with me 'cause I'm DYIN ovah heah. I'm trying to print a 96"-wide image in Photoshop CS2 (Mac, Tiger) and the "print" command is greyed-out. If I crop the image to a smaller size, the print command comes back. Does anyone know if this is a Photoshop sizer limit or an OSX limit or what? And is there any workaround? I don't want to have to crop this print. Thanks a ton for any help.

Someone on luminous-landscape.com can most likely help you out.

If your image consists any layers, then try flattening the image and saving it under a different name. Then close PS. Then open PS. (This clears the cache). Now try printing. The image file will be smaller, and perhaps small enough to make the journey through the drivers, etc.

The same can be said about the file in general. Try saving it before printing it, and restarting PS. That may buy you some memory.

A 96" wide image? 8' wide? What printer are you using? What is the other dimension? Can you make the image 96" long instead of wide via page setup and rotating the image and run it through that way?

Photoshop does have print length limits, yes. I don't remember what the length limits are for the various versions. This topic been discussed at length here:

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/EpsonWideFormat/messages

Search the archives and you'll find what you are looking for, eventually (the yahoo search functions are ssllllooooowww).

There are workarounds. The main workaround is to print with a RIP of course. Since you aren't using a RIP now, you probably don't need most of the functionality of a full up RIP. So you can get by with a scaled down version such as Qimage (PC only?) or a similar product. Again, all this is discussed and discussed again in the archives of the yahoo group listed above.
