In D.C., the air is HOT. In Colorado, it's THIN.

This is true, but with little O2, D.C. puts out a lot of CO2.
Today, right now, humidity is 98%. Here when we see fish swim by, we know it humid.

I was thinking more along the lines of how high it is stacked in DC;-) But, Jim is correct. Coming up from sea level can be taxing. You do have the time you've spent on the plane at 8000 feet cabin altitude and then a few hours spent at 5 to 9 thousand as you drive over to 7995 feet Buena Vista area. You might feel better before going higher if you spend the night in Buena Vista at 8000 before you go any higher. Even for us to head up to Mt Antero at 14000 feet we do a lot better if we spend the night at timberline at 11000 first. Also stay well hydrated and personally it seems to help if I take a couple of aspirin before going really high. Also spending the night in Buena Vista or especially at Eric's suggestion of Mt Princeton Hot Springs will give you a quick start in the morning to get to St Elmo before the crowds and a soak in the springs will feel good after the long flight and the drive.
