One thing to be careful of when entering any competition is to make sure you read the fine print. Unfortunately many of the contests also come with causes that state they can use your entry in anyway they wish, whether you win or not. This occurs frequently with online contest submissions. I would not surrender my copyright to any contest just for the sake of hoping I win the contest. Instead look for other ways to get your name out. Or, be very selective which contests you are willing to enter, go the route of a local juried show. If a contest wants to use you image "in perpetuity without compensation" then it is not worth entering.

P.S.: As long as I am talking about copyright, please remember to register you images!
