Thanks for the details Alex, was a joy to read and to poke around your blog some more too. (though I apologize for preferring the older historical photograph of the house over yours. ) I look forward to seeing what more you find on their property!

The -N series Rodenstock lenses are also very nice wide open. My only portrait, of my dad and his grandsons, was shot wide open with a 210mm Caltar II-N.

Yes indeed! Fortunately he noticed before dropping it. These guys have a good time putting on gunfights at the Heritage village in the spring and fall.

    Re: June Portrait Thread

So Amanda seems convinced that her left side is her "better" side, but she doesn't seem to realize I love *all* of her many sides.

This is my first go with the big camera in a year or two and even longer for doing my own devleoping, and I like how it came out.

Technical Nerdery: Window light with reflector fill. Wista 4x5, Nikkor 210mm @5.6, slight tilt to the side to keep both eyes sharp wide open, HP5+ film rated at 400 developed in DD-X 4+1. Scanned on my new Epson V800. Just spot correction and some faint dodging and burning in post.

evanbaines, Beautifully done. It is a very painterly classical approach, simple, elegant, very nice use of pose, space and framing as a unit conception. A fine way indeed to return to the large negative. I must add, that I look forward to using the smae sort of set-up as soon as I get back to m y camera -- 4x5, 210mm, HP5+, natural lighting. Delighted to see your work.

Thank you so much that's kind of you to say! We have a few lovely north-facing windows, although the space is actually quite cramped... I want to get back to doing some of my military portraits with the big camera but I may have to resort to studio lighting if I can't find a comparable spot with a little more room.

    Cheers!
