    San Francisco Galleries or Exhibits

I'll be traveling to San Francisco for the first time in a couple of weeks. Can anyone recommend galleries or current exhibits I should attend?

Should add that Pier 24 (right under the Bay Bridge in SF) is probably the best photo exhibit space / collection in the city. You have to reserve a spot in advance on line. At the moment they are between exhibits but on your next trip.....

That's where they held PhotoFairs SF at the end of January.

Very good list above. Do make sure to see the Arbus at SFMOMA, the prints are amazing. 49 Geary is just so much fun to wander around with its myriad galleries, both showing photographs and other weird contemporary stuff! Rayko is a bit off the beaten track but if you can swing it a nice to visit. Make sure the show is still up. Haven't been to that DeYoung exhibit - they tend to have only one or two small rooms dedicated to photo exhibits, but the Pacific Island art on the second floor is always fun, the viewing platform on the tower is worth a climb, and the restaurant is good. Also if you want to take some photos you can't go wrong with the Japanese Tea Garden right next door. Try and go on a weekday and early if possible so you don't have to work around the visitors.

Another place to consider visiting if you are nearby is SF Camerawork, this non-profit has a nice exhibition space and often has interesting things being shown:

Not in San Francisco, but a short ferry ride away, or BART if you prefer, is the Oakland Museum. They were gifted the Dorothea Lange Archive years ago. If her work suits your interest, some is usually on permanent exhibit along with work by other West Coast photographers. Other than photography, you may also find the museum stimulating in its offerings. I suggest visiting.
