Fujinon SWD 75mm f5.6 with white dots

    Hi,

I'm thinking about getting new Fujinon SWD 75mm f5.6 lens, however I've noticed that there are some white dots in the lens.

Would you know what this is?

Is it worth buying the lens?

    Any other thoughts?

    Thanks for your help.

The dots are black paint separating from the barrel, often called Schneideritis. The consensus is that they reduce value but are harmless. If the price is right, go for it.

Thanks Dan, much appreciate your reply.

Does this Schneideritis usually becomes worse?

As I'm fairly new to this, what would be a good value for this lens?

    Thanks

I agree with Dan, it's just a little breakdown of the black paint on the lens chamfers. It has next to no effect on the image quality or the contrast. I don't know how quickly it gets worse from this point, probably not much, if it's been a few years.

Don't lose any sleep over it. It may or may not get worse, but will have no impact on your images. As mentioned, if the price is right, grab it.

Ondrejek, are you new to large format, or new to wide angle lenses in the 4x5" format?

This may help people formulate answers pertinent to your question(s).

As to cost, or value. I have been on the market for a Fujinon SWD f/5.6 75mm lens for years, however whenever anything pops up in Australia, it is prohibitively priced. USA prices are better, and I've found Japanese prices are around the cheapest. Not by much, but their prices seem to be the lowest around. Japan is also the place where the SWD 65mm and SWD 75mm Fujinon lenses are plentiful, or so it seems to me.

I have the Fujinon SWD f/5.6 65mm lens, it uses a 67mm filter. I have a 67mm centre graduated filter for my 65mm lens, the same filter will fit a 75mm SWD lens, and it should provide an even exposure across the film for the 75mm unit. Hence my search for a reasonably priced SWD 75mm lens.

I'm also in Australia and purchased an older but EBC coated Fujinon SWD 75mm f5.6 from Japan via eBay a year or so ago for US$325 including postage. There are several listed on eBay right now, the going price seems to start around AUD$650 including postage. Prohibitive? Maybe, but that's the asking price at the moment. Add a couple to your watch list and see if any sellers make you an offer.

FYI, the first version of the Fujinon SWD f5.6 65mm lens (there were three) used 62mm filters.

Thanks, good advice and I have once been contacted by a seller who on listing second time around did contact me with an offer, however it apparently sold before I could get back. I'm in no rush, one day something may come up, if so great, otherwise I'll continue using my 65mm for anything wider than 90mm.

Hmm, I didn't know that, or more likely, I've forgotten that earlier ones with different optics and filter sizes existed. Starting to forget things more these days....
