    Color casts in digital prints

I have noticed color casts with my digital prints done from B&W scans. I use a web-based printing service that otherwise does a great job, but I need real blacks and real grays in my prints, and not shades of magenta, etc. Does anyone know of an online printing service that does "real" B&W prints up to 24x30? My only prerequisite is that they accept the images in digital form. Alternatively, as I live in the SF Bay Area, I might be able to drive in and drop off the CDROM to a local place you'd recommend. Thank you.

Any reputable printing service doing digital printing should have their output device profiled to avoid color casts.

what sort of output are you looking for? (that is, do you want inkjet, Lambda, lightjet, etc.)

    Try www.mpix.com

They print on true B&W RC Matte paper that Kodak developed just for digital printers. The paper has a little softness to it, so I just give the image a little additional USM in photoshop. They print up to 24x30 and their service has been excellent to date.

Try calypsoinc.com in Santa Clara (2002 Martin Avenue · Santa Clara, California 95050).

They provide the ICC profile for their printer on their web-site. Before you send off your image, you convert it to that colorspace and the resulting printout always matches what you see on your screen. They're pricey than most online printing services, but they're worth it IMHO.
