Pulled up Googlemaps, we docked across the Firth and had to take a bus in to Edinburgh proper.
Probably Rosyth Naval Dockyard. Just next to the Forth Bridges. There would be a rail and a road bridge at that time but now there are two road bridges and a rail bridge.

That's probably about right. There were other British Navy ships there, including one submarine. Being fellow submarine sailors a number of our crew and the British boat got along well and much alcohol was consumed in the name of good international relations.
Your mention of the rail line reminded me that the one and only time I have ever ridden on a train was a ride back from Edinburgh to wherever it was we were docked.
I recently found a stash of negatives from the pictures I took while in Edinburgh, I'm in the process of getting them scanned in. I'll try to remember to share a link with you once I have them in an online location.

Edinburgh Waverley station to Inverkeithing, Fife then road for a couple of miles to Rosyth. I would really like to see the photographs. Thank you.
