When I was at the south rim it was during the time when planes couldn't land in Phoenix due to heat on the runway...even at that altitude it was way too hot midday. I would love to go back at a more temperate time...

When I started working there in May '77, I would walk about a mile along the rim to get to work -- I started early, so the sun would be coming up over the eastern edge of the Canyon as I walked in the snow to the gas station. If you have the energy to walk down into the Canyon (I don't think I can anymore), April can be like a garden down in there. Very warm during the day, but not yet hot. Also, there is still water in some side creeks and the springs are flowing well.

I hiked down into the Canyon in January one year -- for the week it never got above freezing for very long during the day. Sunny skies, but not much sun gets down into the Canyon in the Winter! You kept your water bottle in your sleeping bag so that you would have water in the morning to drink! Mid-summer...I hiked by the full moon. Pick your season!

This was my first LF exposure and first light on my brand new Toyo 45cf (no Fresnel at the time) and brand new Rodenstock 150mm apo-sironar-S. It took me nearly an hour to set the camera up, focus, and set the exposure before I finally tripped the shutter.. A hiker that I spotted in the valley about 2 miles out and 500' down to the left arrived just seconds after the shutter was tripped This location is located at the mid-point of a 7.5 mile loop hike and was shot on Fuji ReadyLoad RVP which I used exclusively back then.

It turns out that that was my second LF exposure. The first was from the same location but a few feet back. After I shot it I decided on a tighter composition and moved the camera just a few feet forward. In the ensuing delay which was a result of my inexperience with the camera and lack of a Fresnel (I wanted the foreground sharp and was employing tilt for the first time), the sun had sunk lower on the horizon which gave an overall warmer lighting to the scene and the aspen glow in the sky - all of which adds to the composition. The lesson, I guess, is once you have found the shot don't 'shoot-n-go' but sit and wait it out.
