Mounting a Packard shutter on a Super Speed Graphic w/ DIY bulb

I got a nice little Bausch and Lomb 5 inch Cinephor lens from Jim Galli. With a super fast aperture I needed some kind of shutter so I decided to go with a front-mounted Packard #6. When I was gathering information on how to mount the shutter I didn't see a lot of pictures posted of this kind of setup so I figured I would share mine.

Here's the rundown of how I did it:

    1. Drill a hold in the lens board that would hold the lens with a tight fit
    2. Attached a PVC plumbing fitting to the lens board with epoxy (note: this is fairly permanent)
    3. Mounted the lens with hot glue. The front of the lens is flush with the PVC.
    4. Mounted the shutter with hot glue
    5. The bulb is for filling pipettes. I had it laying around so I used it. I drilled a hole in the back side to be able to use the proper thumb technique.
    6. The rubber tubing is for physiotherapy. I got it at the medical supply store for a few bucks and it works great.

So there you go. It's not that pretty but it works just fine.

Re: Mounting a Packard shutter on a Super Speed Graphic w/ DIY bulb

I built a version of this mount for my Packard No. 6. I can easily change from my 105mm Petzval to my 250mm Petzval as needed. If you have access to some basic shop tools, you should be able to make one easily.

My version of the mount uses ¼″ thick Dibond, with the edges thinned to ⅛″ to fit the saw kerf, for the plate that slides over the lens barrel. My earlier prototypes used flimsier materials (e.g., PVC) and were unsatisfactory.

I don't recommend you try to make the hole yourself — find a machinist & pay him or her $20 to bore it for you! Have it made a tiny bit large and wrap a piece of gaffer tape around the lens. When the hole slides over the tape, you get a nice friction fit.
