    Heliopan Graduated Neutral Density Filters

I have searched numerous sites and forums but nowhere can I find whether screw-on type Heliopan graduated neutral density filters are made of glass or plastic. Anyone know?

Glass.. Schott glass I'm told. Personally I find Lee type grads much easier to place accurately than the rotating type.

Acrylic. The Graduated center filters are glass as were the rectangular graduated filters which were also made in acrylic but could warp.

Please clarify that - you said acrylic, but then say glass? Which is it?

    Don -

Bob's response stated that graduated center filters (not grad nd's) and rectangular grads (not screw-ons) were glass. Acrylic was Bob's response to Dan's original question, which referred to screw-on grad nd's.

Rectangular grads were made in glass and acrylic. Glass is no longer made and acrylic can warp. So we only imported the glass ones.

Screw in grads are only acrylic.

Graduated center filters are only glass.

I've just bought a B&W 77mm round ND grad - 2 stops. I'ts plastic, but very good plastic (I'm fussy). Even though it is a round filter and not a sliding rectangular ND grad, I reckon I can get some positioning with it using front rise/fall. I've had a good look at negs made with this filter in use, and so far, (no prints as yet) the fact it is plastic seems not to be too important - havn't tried to clean it yet though! A long time ago I used coloured grads (plastic) that were influential in picture quality, but cheap. The Heliopan filters are probably as good as there is in plastic.

Under what circumstances can (or do) the acrylic filters warp?
