    going to Egypt

    Hello,

I am going for a wedding this June only for a week.
I am not planning to take my 4x5 but my mamiya C330 and my Bessa R2A.
Any recommendations on Restaurants, hotels etc. We are looking for hotel accommodations where there are not many tourist. Although, we have local people it would be great to get more info.
Most of my photography is natural light, not flash, street unless I am doing 4x5.

I tried to send email for Luca but it came back.
Please if you contact through the LF site.

    Thanks in Advance

    going to Egypt

I just got back from a tour about 3 weeks ago. We had an armed guard on the bus the whole time. We also had police escorts in Cario. About every third person is packing heat as private security, police, etc. How safe it is is debatable.

I carried a hasselblad and a digital camera. Most places allow photography, but some places have restrictions, like in the valley of the kings, video is prohibited. The sun was always out and I only used my tripod once the whole two weeks. So don't know how tripods are handled. You will be traveling on your own, a 4x5 would be situable. On organized tours like this one, a hand camera works well. Would have hated to haul a 4x5 on and off the bus.

I did not encounted restrictions for a "professional" camera. I did have to lock up my blad in the royal city in Thailand last fall, before I could enter the city. There was a big sign with a drawing of a hasselblad with the circle/slash over it.

It gets very hot in the south near Aswia. 120 degrees in the summer. Be sure to drink lots of water. I almost passed out when I left the ship for an hour with out my trusty water bottle.

Good luck and let us know how it goes and what works.

IMHO, I'd imagine a handheld Speed with a lens that would fit inside the body (135, 150), with a stack of Readyloads and a meter on your waist, would be the ultimate camera for a trip like this. Don't fuss with tripods and movements, just shoot. You probably won't get every shot you want, but you should bring home quite a nice impression of things by working simply and shooting more film.

I hate to bring my buddy Littmann up, but this gallery of Havana done by Michael Norton, on the http://www.littman45single.com website, is a great example of what you can do with one camera/one lens/mostly handheld, in an exotic location: http://www.littman45single.com/10gallery/gal02.html

    going to Egypt

I finally finished developing my film from Egypt. I'd recommend you use the sunny F22 rule there! Most of my negatives are fairly dense.
