It seems from press releases that the latest Epson scanner 4990 can scan 8x10" film, and provides Digital ICE for film scanning. This scanner would really hit a sweet spot, as 8x10 is notoriously difficult to scan without dust.

My question is will it scan 8x10" film with digital ICE, and under what limitations? The 4870 software had a limitation of resolution with ICE depending on how much physical RAM was in the computer.

Not even sure the 4870 limitation was dependent on RAM. I've 2.5GB and I've never been able to scan a file larger than 300MB
with ICE, certainly a great disapointment. If the 4990 has such a limitation, don't expect to see it documented, as this was not
the case for the 4870 limitation.

Thanks, QT. Well, I do not have a4870 anymore, got a Microtek 1800f instead, but I did read somewhere in the documentation about physical RAM limitations (on Windows). I am not sure where, if it was in printed or electronic documentation.

    QT,

Is your copy of photoshop configured to use enough RAM?

Not a PS problem, as this is an issue with the standalone Epson software as well.

    Lars, greetings.

I've been using an Epson 3200 to scan 4x5 sheets of Bergger 200 (processed in Rodinal if it matters). I want a scanner that will handle 8x10, and I am torn between buying the Epson 4990 or one of the Microteks, the 1800f or the i900.

I am amazed that no one seems to have had any real experience with both the Epson (3200/4870) and the Microtek (1800f/i900) flatbeds when it comes to scanning negatives. Choosing between them has been akin to tossing a coin.

You're the first person I've found who's used both machines. Can you comment on how they compare? Now that the Epson 4990 will scan 8x10, but otherwise is near-identical to the 4870, would you recommend it or the Microtek for scanning 8x10 negatives?

    Best,
