They are pretty cool, however I couldn't get the name of the photographer, do you know it?

    Thanks for the link.

One of my favorite landscape photographers. In my opinion, he is the one who made the definitive view of Half Dome: http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5126/...09c991aecb.jpg
Thanks, but I'd rather just watch:

That must have been him. Wasn't he the guy in the top hat who yelled "Helloooooo Glacier Point" too?

For many downloadable Watkins photos, search for Carleton Watkins in http://www.loc.gov/pictures/search/. Stream and trees with Half Dome in background, Yosemite Valley, Calif is available as a 209mb download at http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/95514315/. Just the image without the mat will print at about 20.6x27 inches at 300 dpi. Not too bad for 150 years ago!

I realise that now, at first I thought that was the name of the presenter, having never seen that outlet before, nor ever having heard of that photographer living where I am almost at the bottom of the world.

That is an absolutely gorgeous view of Half Dome from the Merced. Unfortunately that same view today will include a wide barren sandy beach on the right instead of the wooded area shown in the photograph and Housekeeping campground is further to the right. Winter, especially after a heavy snow fall in the valley, is the best time to shoot this view as Housekeeping is closed during the winter and the beach will be deserted.

If you get the chance to see an exhibition of Watkins' prints, don't pass it up. The quality of the prints is simply astounding even today, 150 years later.

I own two of his (approx.) 16x20 prints. The Weather Channel story is not quite correct. He was out on a photographic trip when his partner declared bankrupcy -- then the same partner bought the rights to all of Watkins negatives. Watkins had to go out and re-photograph the Yosemite scenes again (the "New Series"). The SF earthquake destroyed all his new images...and his mind -- The Napa Hospital was for the mentally ill.

Another interesting photographer of the same period was Peter Britt -- came to So. Oregon to mine gold, but ended up as a photographer and horticulturist. Working out of Jacksonville, he took the first photographs (wet plate) of Crater Lake.

This is one of the Watkins I have...along with one of mine (8x10 platinium print -- The Three Brothers and Three Brothers)
