Re: Burke and James Commerical View 8x10

I would post a picture, but the camera isn't physically here yet. The part I need to make/find is the flat bed like in the pictures Roger Thoms and Dr Tang posted.

Good pictures of the metal rail is what I am after. Most of the ones on the web are rather small and hard to extract detail from.

Any other ideas/advice would be appreciated--it's my first time working on something like this.

McMaster-Carr has gear focusing racks. The main lens I will be using is a 15in f/5.6 Wollensak telephoto. How much rail would be good to start with? For shooting both at infinity and closer (well, as close as feasible with a telephoto) up.

I'll take a pix next time I'm at the studio

but I think trying to make that part will be a lot more trouble than looking for a beatup one with bad bellows on ebay and buying that for 150-200 bucks, and salvaging it's rail part

I believe this will only cover 5x7 max at infinity. Wollensak says you will need around 10" of bellows draw for infinity focus w/ the 15" tele but not enough coverage for 8x10 so look for a 5x7 reducing back for 8x10 B&J Commercial too.

Re: Burke and James Commerical View 8x10

After looking at it, the Burke and James Commercial has a very heavy bed which is 1¼" inch thick. Much of this is to facilitate the sliding tripod block. In use the sliding tripod block on my camera only adds instability aka camera shake. IMHO it is not needed and a bed could be made much lighter which would be a nice thing for these cameras. Please let me know any solutions you come up with for an alternate bed. FYI the bed on my 8x10 is 33¾" long. The 11x14 bed is 39" long.Click image for larger version.
