Metering Mistakes

I was just thinking about my shoot the other day and realized I probably made some metering mistakes and have a lump in my stomach.

I pointed the Sekonic L358 with dome raised from subject toward the camera.
ISO was 400, f22 aperature priority, Meter gave me 1/80.
I metered toward the sky and that gave me 1/250 so I felt a little more comfortable, knowing I did not want open sky to be 18% Gray.
2 stops would be 1/60. I took a couple close up reflected readings and they were within 1/2 stop of what I expected.


However Sunny 16 rule would put exposure at 1/400 at f16 or 1/200 for f22. Sunny day with almost no clouds.
Even allowing for time of year and city haze for possibly another 1/2 stop ~ 1/150 at f22.
So I am thinking i over exposed by 1-2 stops.

At the subject, should I point the meter toward the light or toward the camera? Meter instructions say toward the camera.

With incident metering (with white half dome covering the meter cell) you point the center of the dome towards the camera and take a reading.

1-2 stops over with LF film should be fine anyway.

In anything but blistering sun with transparency film, I use sunny 11. So, say HP5 is a 250 speed film. Add 2 stops for using f22 instead of f11:1/60. I would have used exactly 1/60 at f22 anyway. I would say the meter did you well.

Sometimes it all just works like it is supposed to. My negs came out with various shades of grey and good contrast. I will print them next week to see the details.
The class instructor also suggested sunny 11 works very well for B&W.
It hard not to over think this stuff.

Ughhh, The saga continues.. the negatives are a little thin but the cheap paper I bought had exposure times of 3-6 seconds. It even developed in about 30-45 seconds.
Ordered some Ilford and will try again next week. At least 2 of the 4 images look like I may be able to salvage them.
