Re: The top 10(+) character traits of the LF Gentleman

Another trait from the LF Gentleman's Handbook:

The LF Gentleman doesn't cease being one, just because he carries his camera into remote areas where there's nobody else around. Call it wilderness etiquette.

For example, the LF Gentleman hiker who comes upon a rock cairn thinks hard about whether to topple it or not, because there are good reasons and bad reasons for doing so.

In a more general sense, the LF Gentleman thinks before doing, when alone or with others.

    -----
No surprise, the illustrations in this handbook show a lot of LFers with well-groomed, finely trimmed beards.

A LF gentlemen respects Queen, country, school and family (in that order), is polite to all, even foreigners despite their lack of breeding and moral fibre. He uses the the word 'love' only when talking about dear old nanny, he never runs unless playing rugby. He does not wear brogues in Town, they are, of course, a country shoe. He will be brave in all situations, especially when the members of the National Trust are trying to stopping him taking photos of the old Westmorland place, ' I knew Charles at school, confound it!' He will only be drunk, swear and fraternise with women when the ladies are not present...
I could go on but, above all, the LF gentleman will be wearing Tweed as he shoots, Harris of course....Well, except in town obliviously!

One thing that has always impressed me is that notable pro LF photographer's I've had the good fortune to meet are extraordinarily generous and supportive of us newbies. Merg Ross, John Sexton, Ansel Adams, Peter Gowland and many others have impressed me as being true gentlemen of the first order.

Then again there have been some cantankerous old coots, but they aren't geramine to this thread.

    My top 10:
    1. White
    2. MALE
    3. American (as in, US of A)
    4. Middle aged or older
    5. Over confident
    6. Pretentious (and thus knows more then others, and can assume things)
    7. Knows so much more then everyone else that he can presume to offer advice (courteously or otherwise)
    8. Would self define as a moderate liberal, but is OK with various contradictions like "light" or obscured/embedded racism and or sexism
    9. Is not a woman
    10. Auto didactic artist

...if one was to read this forum as an nonparticipating stranger.
This is probably true about photography in general, and most photography forums. Much has been written about the over-abundance of the "white male perspective" in photography - e.g. here.

I know it's a joke, but it's really a 8-item list, with #2/#8 and #6/#7 being the same. To replace those I would add "relatively wealthy by a global standard", and "often more interested in the technology of photography than the art".

I do not think a true gentleperson would consider race, gender, or nationality as 'character' traits.

A true LF gentleman will usually have photographic expenses that exceed his photographic income.

Nevertheless - they are such, and fishbulb said it and posted this link you should read:

Can't be helped, espcecially in light of such threads as the "why are they nudes" and even better "not pornographic, but naked for our amusement small format nudes, by men only of naked women only", not to mention the title of this thread - gentle MAN leading to a sheer lack of female participants. It's no wonder.

Vaughn is correct in pointing out #1-3 are not personal character traits.

    They are demographic trends.

BTW, I enjoyed the humor of your post, and your link is very interesting and worth a read by everyone.
