    I have used pieces cut from jar-grippers - the thin textured 'rubber' kind - with success as a grip surface.

    It probably pays off to be sure that the socket is deeper than the longest screw you expect to use. More than a few 35mm cameras have come to grief due to long tripod screws distorting the metal at the base of the hole. LF cameras don't seem to be as vulnerable, fortunately. Space just isn't at a premium?

    No McMaster, no first world

    Tripod's plates use cork too. In fact one of the ones I have is missing the cork which makes cameras spin like crazy.
