I suppose; I use a scan dual iv and it works with the Minolta software it comes with if you perform a driver modification, which is quite easy. I think it works for the iii as well; you'd have to Google it.

It won't get much data from 35mm. It's really delivers somewhere around 1600 - 2000 dpi depending on how you measure it. By the time you get up to 2500 dpi the contrast drops considerably.

That being said, you'll be able to make nice prints from 35mm at 5x7 size and display images in the web quite nicely

I'll echo that. The 4990 is poor for 35mm, ok for 645, decent for 6x7 and great for 5x4, 6x12 and 6x17. For 5x7 and 10x8 I imagine it's knockout too.
