Marty, don't do too perfect of a job, since the border folks can ask for authenticity of the piece :>). Yikes, drilling the wood is not an option. I've seen curly maple very nicely "mahoganized" (Chippendale type) and I have doubts that the Border Patrol have hands-on specialists who could tell the difference. Anyway, the thing to do is check the BP website....so you don't have any funky surprises just before you board the aircraft.
Actually, I was thinking of making guitar stands with the maple and thought this process might be nice. As for the Customs well, there have been instances when musical instruments have been confiscated and destroyed. I was afraid that some of the cameras made from mahogany or more exotic woods might suffer the same fate.
