Ok so, for someone that's not familiar with the red dot artar series, what are the qualities of the lens that make it "famous"?

Is this for ULF or what? Since I only currently shoot 4x5 field camera and 11x14 pinhole hah!

    Hi Stone,

The Red Dot Artars are process lenses, like for huge flat-plane process cameras.

They have very flat field, essentially zero geometric distortion, and very well-corrected aberrations.

I've never seen MTF curves for them, but I expect they would be very smooth off-axis.

They're generally described as diffraction-limited, meaning you can't get better resolution from any lens.

They would probably be good choices for ULF since they were made in long FLs with large ICs.

If you believe you can, or you believe you can't... you're right.

Oh I see, so what's different about the "red dot" vs any other process lens?

Process lenses I thought were better 1:1?

Not much difference per decade of actual mfg. But unlike most process lenses, artars were routinely available in regular shutters far view camera use. Most of the
extant ones are Goerz, but some of the later ones were marketed by Schneider minus the red dot designation (Apo Artar as I recall).

I thought the red dot meant it was coated?
