Think it might help to reinforce them with fiberglass cloth?
Shucks, you can even get small sizes of carbon fiber at ye olde hobbye emporium.

Unscrew the handle and see what thread it uses. Go to McMaster-Carr's website and search through the stud handles for something you like. They have a lot more handles than the ones on the linked page. Wander through the catalog a bit.

Do what you like - the metal levers worked fine for 26 years and counting…
You can find the metal ones at the link I provided for about $12

In my case I need 5 of them that would be $60 + shipping.
I just cant justify spending that much money to retro fit this tripod with the aluminum levers that 5 have already broken :-(
