Black and White guy wants to shoot Color

I use photoshop professionally, but in a design environment where there is no color calibration going on at all (those nice prepress people take care of that for us). So the nuts and bolts of photoshop are old news to me, but color management, profiles, and scanning color film are a mystery.

Can anyone recommend a good source of information (book, website, etc.)?

Paul, Sorry this took so long I've been buried.

I use an Epson 3200 and a4870. The software functions for color negatives are:

In Silverfast the neg profiles show up when you choose color neg. as your source. The options for film manufacture and type are the profiles. I use Fuji NPS.

In Epson Scan there are no profiles per,se, but the auto exposure/color balance button in the bottom left of the histogram window does a pretty good job of approximating exposure and balance for Fuji NPS which is the neg film that we use.

For general purpose and typical negatives the Epson Scan gives us a very adequate scan that meets the needs of our clients. For problematic negs we go to the more sophisticated Silverfast.
    Thanks,
    Kirk

The "Real World" books are good at explaining color management in Photoshop.

Real World Photoshop CS has a good section on color management. Real World Color Management deals with color management in depth.

A good website is Digital Dog.

Thanks for all the help, everyone. I think I will just shoot a bunch of chromes at first and see how it goes. at least the results are easy to evaluate. If I shoot negs and the scans look terrible, I won't know if it's the negs or the scans. If it does come down to negs, then it looks like I have some homework coming. Cheers, P
