I found Stroebel's book very helpful. Current editions are fairly expensive, but you can pick up old copies pretty cheap. I've been learning on a Graflex Graphic View (mid 40's), and picked up a copy of Stroebel's book from the early 80's cheap off of ebay - figured that I couldn't go too far wrong if the book was younger than the camera was.
Cheers! Bill
I am sorry to say, given the received wisdom, that I found the Stroebel book extremely unhelpful. If you are a beginner, avoid it at all costs. Get Steve Simmons' book, get Ansel Adams book "The Negative", and download/print "How to focus the view camera" from the large format photography site associated with this forum. Stroebel is fine if you are into mathematics and not taking pictures and who knows, some day I may appreciate it.
