    I've happily used the Manfrotto 3047 for years and years.
    Not the final world in precision, and the hex plate needs to be double checked to make sure it's fully engaged. I'm used to this but it's not ideal.

    If I were shopping now and had the budget I'd look at the Induro heads.

    The Arca Cube is probably the best head made, but I can't see paying for it.
    I also know people who use this thing with 8x10 cameras and medium format digital technical cameras, and say that strangers gather around gawking and asking about the tripod head.

    I've read some excellent reviews on those heads, but I've been told, by longer-time owners of the heads, that, eventually, they are prone to slipping and become difficult to tighten properly with time.
    I mention it because several people told me that, not just one lonely crank.
