will HP G4050 scan 8x10 negs?

I saw on the internets somewhere that said someone did it. I see it can do 4x5 negs. The glass area looks large. I'm wondering if it can just be masked out with some cardboard and scan 8x10 negs?

Vinny, is this something you know from experience? Do you have, or did you have, one of these?

I'm interested because I was unaware of any other scanner outside the Epson V700/4990 that could handle negs up to 8x10. In the little bit of internet reading I just did on this HP scanner, it's hard to tell - not many people scan 4x5 or 8x10 negatives these days.

Yes it can. However the scan quality is not as good as the epson scanners. I have a g4050 at home and use a v750 at work and the v750 definitely produces better scans.

Thanks vinny. For my 8x10's, I just wanna good look at the negs before I start doing some alt process on them.

I had a G4050 and it will scan 8x10 (I've scanned four 4x5 negs in one go) but there was a bit of distortion at the edges of the scan bed on my copy. Not horrible, but I noticed it. I also noticed a considerable amount of digital noise in the image. If you're just using it for proofing it should be fine though. Look on your local Craigslist, you might get lucky. I sold mine for $40.

There's no film holder for 8x10, nor any guide marks. Lay it directly on the glass and keep in mind that you need to keep the calibration area unobstructed.

    FYI

    G4050 works with Vuescan X64 in Win7 64.

In the quest for a cheap scanner I bought a G4050 (no holders, no power adapter, just the bare scanner). Vuescan list this scanner transparency support only for the X32 version.

I have the X64 version and with the latest drivers from HP is working perfect. I didn't install the HP software, only the drivers. Compared with Epson 3200 I see no difference.

I can do 8x10 at 2400dpi fast (as fast as 4x5 on Epson at 3200 dpi). The maximum 4800 dpi resolution is not working at 8x10, the software hang on after 1/3 of the job.

The preview is very fast. Negatives on the glass works best for me, I've done some cardboards frames/guides but you can work without them. For 8x10/5x7 proofing is perfect. Together with Xray film is a cheap entry in LF.

You can still buy G4050 new and the latest drivers are 14.5.1 from 12 Feb 2014

I've scanned ~500 8x10s on mine, never had any issues. It's a bargain scanner that does a decent job all-around. I scan in color so I can use the reasonably good dust removal, then process in Photoshop.

Amazon shows 2 kinds. Are they the same or equivalent? If not, which one is the one to get?
