How do you pack your spare ground glass ?

What is the collective wisdom on how to pack a spare ground glass?

I am invisioning two pieces of plexiglass with felt tape between the plexiglass and the ground glass. Maybe duct tape sealing the two plexiglass pieces

    Any better ideas??

    Thanks,

    Jesse

Get a sheet of clear Lexan of the right dimentions, leave the plastic backing on it. This is for emergencies. You can store it any way you want, it is practically indestructable. (Tape it to the lid of your bag, put it in the bottom of your bag, it doesn't matter, you can't break it.) You could in the field scuff it up with just about anything and it will be usable. Sand paper, gravel, etc. Or make a nice Lexan one (valve grinding compound after #600 wet or dry sandpaper works very well) and replace your ground glass and you don't have to worry about carrying a spare. And it weighs less.

Carry it in an empty 25 sheet box for 4x5 film. Be sure to also pack the proper size small screw driver.

Bought one in the early 1980's with my first view camera, I know it's around here somewhere!

IMHO you would be far better to focus on acquiring a ground glass protector and a quality case to protect your camera and exercise common sense when using it. I would sure as heck rather take an extra film holder or two into the field than a spare GG. Besides, it would be futile to attempt to replace the ground glass on my linhof cameras because they are shimmed to precise positions on the camera. As the previous post mentioned, the odds are against you ever needing it.

    Cheers!

I keep my spare GG sandwiched between 2 sheets of bubble wrap inside an empty 25 sheet film box. It gets packed in a side pocket of my case.

BTW here's a great ground glass protector: get a piece of clear acrylic and velcro it to the camera back with small round velcro buttons. Total cost under $5. Works great - I only need to remove it if I have to use a lupe for fine focus. Much of the time, it just stays there. An added benefit is in the winter, the acrylic gets all fogged up while I'm setting up; then I pop it off for final focus. This tip from Richard Ritter.

I like the clear acrylic idea. But really I didn't know I should have a spare GG!

If you're really paranoid, you should get a spare camera...
