    widest angle lens for 14x17

What are the widest angle lenses that will cover 14"x17"?? I think the coverage requirements are about the same as for 12"x20"

Clearly the widest is the Schneider 210 Super Symar XL which will set you back about $2,700 and is one massive hunk of glass. Given the fact that my 600mm Fuji is still considered a wide angle on 12x20 and still meet your qide angle "criteria", I feel that the next up the 210 would either be an older 14" Goerz Dagor or a 355 G Claron at about $700 that will provide you with wide angle proportions and cover your 14x17.

    Cheers!

Facetiously, I supposed the 4 3/4" Goerz Hypergon. It almost covers wide open and goes up to 15" X 18" coverage stopped down. Regrettably, it is just as hard to use as it is to find.

More realistically, in the early 1970's, Fuji made a 300mm size Fujinon SW with a 720mm image circle. I haven't done the math, but it seems like that ought to be way more than enough. 300mm wouldn't really be all that wide, but I can't think of anything shorter that would cover.

Older 12 inch dagors will cover, as will the 240 f/9 Zeiss Dagor if centered perfectly and stopped down. If you can find a protar V (F/18!) in the 8-1/2-9 inch range, it should cover also. The Cooke Series VIIa 222mm will definitely cover. All of these are considerably smaller than the 210 Symmar XL, which is certainly a delicious (and enormous) piece of glass.

I have a 12" Berlin Goerz Dagor that covers 12x20 quite well. I usually use at least a little front rise, so I believe that an older 12" Dagor will cover your format. I know that the berlin versions have a poor reputation but I love mine. The shutter on the other hand hates me.

A modern lens that would cover 14X17" with some movements is the 300mm f/9 Computar. I use this lens on 12X20" and it covers the format with more than three inches of rise. And performance at the edges is much superior to what you will get with a 12" Dagor.

As for Dagors, the very old ones tend to provide a wider circle of illumination than the newer ones made in the 40s and 50s. I am not sure why but the newer ones appear to have been mechanically vignetted, perhaps to reduce flare, and do not allow the full 87 degrees or so that is often stated as the coverage of Dagors.

Course, for my next lens for 12X20 I am holding out for a 180 mm Rodenstock Pantogonal, but only if it comes with the famous Rodenstock Enixantos center filter.
