    Shooting in the rain/snow

Hey all, I'm going on a trip this weekend and unfortunately its looking like rain and snow will be in the forecast for the next couple days. Do you guys have any tips on shooting in this kind of weather? I might have to bust out the digital camera depending on what happens.

If it's raining I shoot with a Pentax 6x7 instead of LF. I have a raincoat for the big Pentax that keeps the water off everything except for the lens when shooting. If it's snowing (but not windy), I'll shot LF since you can blow the snow off before re- packing the camera and use your dark cloth to cover the camera while focusing and determining exposure (all of my Toyo's have a folding focusing hood installed).

Don't exhale under the "dark cloth".

When it's raining, I try to keep my pack hanging under the sticks. That way it gets the same protection as the camera. I have the remnants of a camera cart cover- essentially a giant plastic bag- that I use to cover the camera in the rain. It has a hole for the lens and can be placed to overhang the lens and keep spots off.

A black shower curtain comes in handy---a focusing cloth & raincoat in one package!

Large garbage bags are terrific for “3-minute-on-3-minute-off” shower cycles.

I get a lot of those in my region. ;^(

I have never, however, gone looking to shoot in the rain. Don’t need to. For I can count on the rain to go looking for this photographer. When it finds me, I either pack-up – or adjust if the shot looks good. (Really good.)

Your digital camera is probably much more sensitive to moisture and rain/snow than any of your LF gear. A LF camera can be dropped in a swamp and survive with a little cleaning; I wouldn't try that with my Canon dSLR.

Garbage bags, as some have suggested, and bring warm gloves that can work a 4x5 camera's small-ish knobs.
Fingers get very cold, very fast, when constantly handling cold metal.

Big, heavy duty plastic garbage bag with a hole for the lens. Camera bag in big plastic garbage bag.
