    Rembrandt Portrait Lens

    Hello.
I have the Rembrant 12" f/4.5. It is a soft wide open and sharp closed down lens. It is very much like the Kodak Portrait lens. I presumed it to be a knock-off of that lens design-wise. It...

Hello Guy, I am currently using the Maco 820 in 8x10 size and have had no problems with fingerprints on the film. I hope you solve the problem as this is a good film, result-wise. Peter
  5. Caltar 375 f 6.3 in an Ilex No. 5 for 4x5?

Hi Michael, I have owned this lens for a number of years and am quite pleased with it. Like yours mine is mounted in a #5 shutter. I use it on my 8x10 camera as that focal length pretty much...
  6. Loosing Technical Pan...Who Will Really Miss It?

I'll miss it. The only problem I have had with it in twenty years of shooting it involved streaking with the 120 size. A pre-developer water bath cured that. I love the film. I have never understood...

    Apo Nikkor Process Lenses

I have the 240mm f/9 that I use on my 8x10. It covers with a little to spare and is very sharp and snappy. Steve Grimes front-mounted onto a #3Melles Griot shutter. Works fine. Peter
  9. which is finer grained: the best B&W film, or the best transparency film?

I used to shoot a Kodak Spectroscopic film that was based on glass plates. It had an iso of .ooo2. Nothing on a film base even came close. Check with Kodak Professional to see what they offer on...

Hi Christian, I have been using Soccorro paper from Bostick&Sullivan with great results. I find that living at sea -level where the humidity is often 80-100%, I need a paper that is a little harder...

This is a new soft-focus optic from Cooke. It is a copy of the formula that Pinkham-Smith used in their lenses around the turn of the 19th century. At the larger aperatures the softening is ...

    Technical Pan Sheet Film

I consider myself lucky. I haven't had any of the problems listed above. My only word of advice is to pre-wet, especially for the 120. I use mostly technidol developer. I tried pyro and got too...

Care and Feeding of an Ebony?

Hi Matthew, I work with ebony wood. It is an oily wood that, in my experience, can be difficult where waxing is involved. There are some waxes that complement it and others that merely stay a...
  15. Sally Mann's sharp AND soft pictures

As to using a close-up meniscus lens for soft-focus , I get much better coverage by mounting the filter behind the shutter rather than in front. The front of the filter thus facing the film.

    Commercial Ektar vs Ilex

My first 8x10 lens was a 14 3/4 " Ilex Caltar in an Ilex #5 shutter. The lens really suprised me. It is extremely sharp and very snappy. I have no complaints.
