    That sounds lucious!
  2. Re: Walking around Midtown neighborhood, New-York City

The first and last time I was in NYC, Manhattan near Penn Station, the sidewalks (etc) were so crowded that even handheld photography was challenging. I can't imagine trying to set up a tripod.

    Re: Deranged Aperture Blades

Not a bad plan... but in your spare time, if you can find a lot of it, you should really try to repair that aperture. Everyone should do that once... it's a real character building experience. That...

    Re: Brightness of ground glass

Sorry to hear this and don’t think you are alone. Sometimes the most thoughtful acts can get misconstrued in a marriage. Whatever you do, don’t even think about rearranging the clothes in the closet.

  11. Re: How difficult is it to adjust TOP MOUNTED rangefinder on a Graflex?

Be careful of your assumptions about how press cameras were treated. They were professional tools and generally treated as such since income depended on them. Many were used quite heavily yet many...
  12. Re: How difficult is it to adjust TOP MOUNTED rangefinder on a Graflex?

As a complete aside, buyers tend to lose negotiating leverage when too many questions are asked and when the decision process takes too long. If it’s a 4x5 and the price is acceptable to you, then it...
  13. Re: How difficult is it to adjust TOP MOUNTED rangefinder on a Graflex?

That’s a focusing scale, similar to the rangefinder. It’s an alternative but is dependent on being the proper scale for the lens ( like the rangefinder cam).

Look on the bed for the little things...
  14. Re: How difficult is it to adjust TOP MOUNTED rangefinder on a Graflex?

Basically, yes. Infinity on Graphics is set by extension of lens-board on the bed and if referenced by infinity stops. The infinity stops are adjustable. Infinity is an object long way away. The...
  15. Re: How difficult is it to adjust TOP MOUNTED rangefinder on a Graflex?

Difficulty is difficult to really address as it depends a lot on the skills and incentive of the repair person.

I’d start at the beginning by verifying that the camera is complete and has correct...
  16. Re: New Lens Scale: How To Convert Milliseconds To Standard Camera Fractions?

With many flms and photogaphic situations you'll barely notice the "error" if you don't compensate. But averaging to a half-stop compensation on all speeds except your fastest is easy to remember and...
  17. Re: New Lens Scale: How To Convert Milliseconds To Standard Camera Fractions?

It would be a lot easier to compensate using the aperture than changing the shutter speed scale. Or compensate via EI on a light meter.

    Re: Shutter Repairfor Copal 1?

If the broken end doesn't bother you (it wouldn't bother me), I'd just send the shutter for an overhaul and if the repair shop just happens to have a replacement part then that would be an additional...

Or, perhaps, this type of camera is being referenced. I’m not convinced, though, that it had a reflex mirror, though. My impression is that the doors on top were just for loading/unloading the plate....

Re: Old scratched lenses, coatings, etc.

Put a lens hood on it and see if you can discern any significant effects of the scratches. In most cases probably not.

@sharktooth makes a great point. There are many better ways to learn basic photography exposure concepts than Ansel’s writings. His works are best understood after the basics are well understood.

  29. Re: Copal 0 shutter problem: T mode behaves like B mode

If everything else works reasonably well it could be signs of a rather minor issue: the shutter might just need a routine maintenance, what some folks like to call a CLA.

You may want to consider the possibility that the shutter making the intermittent sound might benefit from an overhaul.
  32. Re: Copal buzzing sound cocking with preview open

If I'm not mistaken, the buzzing sound is the slow speed escapement getting manipulated when you are charging the shutter. It's not clear to me that charging while shutter is open is a problem, per...

  36. Re: crappiest camera and lens what did you do with it?

Great topic! For me it is a 1930’s era Kodak Duo 620. The one I got off of eBay was inexpensive but beat up and reeked of WD-40!in the shutter. Once it was aired out and the smell dissipated, it has...
