    Re: Unsharp masking

How much effect? As much as you need. Too much will start looking fake, much like oversharpened or excessively unsharp-masked digital images. The technique itself should not be apparent, but just...

    Re: Unsharp masking

Your concept is correct. But unless your original neg is terribly contrasty, you shouldn't need such a dense mask. A good way to learn is to bracket your mask exposures at different densities, then...

    Re: Unsharp masking

Steve, masking can truly do what "none of the above" on your list can. It's more of a highly versatile tool kit than a single tool. But it's obviously more work, and can be overdone if not careful....

Forgot to say, don't dev the mask itself in pyro. You want it clear, not stained.

    Re: Unsharp masking

Masking can do all kinds of things because there are so many types of masks. A an elementary level like what is under discussion, the contrast of the original is reduced proportionately in the...

    Re: Unsharp masking

The degree of "unsharpness" can finely tuned by the degree of diffusion to enhace edge effect. But the less unsharp the mask is, the more you'll wish you invested in a punch and register system! ...

    Re: Unsharp masking

Learning the ropes of masking can be every bit as much a journey as learning to print well. There are a lot of ways to do it. And it can make a real difference with appropriate images. But it's like...
  9. Re: Landscape Photography in the Portland Oregon area?

Oh gosh. Once I basically commuted the Gorge while staying a week at my in-laws, each day hiking a different side canyon. And each afternoon I stopped at Latourelle Falls gauging the light, water...
  10. Re: Going to a Workshop in Zion? Better leave the tripod.

Some of those trails are quite narrow. I remember hiking to the rim once with a huge pack full of Sinar too wide for even me to fit on the trail across a sandstone ledge. So I actually had to hang...

    Re: Uranium Nitrate

Uranyl nitrate is easy to get here from scientific suppliers, and there simply needs to be a minor shipping surcharge for the tiny quantites a photographer needs. It can't be mailed.

    Re: Impressions on Nikkor M 450mm f9

Went a bit inland today, and the ground fog never cleared up. Beautiful, but glad I did bring an M lens. The b&w sheets can simply be plus developed, but the color negs needed at the contrast they...
  13. Re: Landscape Photography in the Portland Oregon area?

As soon as my soup cools enough to finish it, I'm headed for a fascinating tree I've already made two portfolios of - one in color Ciba, the other b&w prints. Every picture is noticably different and...

  16. Re: Fuji lens aficionados: CM-W 125mm f/5.6 vs APO Symmar-S 120mm L-75

Like I said, this is not a lens with a huge image circle appropriate for significant rise etc anyway. A thin step ring isn't going to make much difference. It is a compact precise lens which is...

    Re: Impressions on Nikkor M 450mm f9

In color photography seemingly minor differences in flare or contrast can affect hue saturation and purity. Otherwise, I wouldn't own the selection of lenses I do! It's often a nice way to fine-tune...

Thanks, Pere. Yes, I have a lux meter, but also a special instrument about a thousand times more accurate. I'm familiar with these variables.
  20. Re: Going to a Workshop in Zion? Better leave the tripod.

Funny. This must only pertains to an official group permit, where they apparently don't want a bunch of people standing around blocking trails with tripods or other clutter like reflectors....

    Re: Goodbye Acros Sheet Film

Don't worry about the "data tests". A point blank test chart might make sense if that is what you do - simply aim a lens at flat copy at a consistent set aperture. But outdoors, I am looking at...

    Re: Impressions on Nikkor M 450mm f9

The proof is in the pudding. Shading your lens is important, and even the specific design of a bellows can affect how much surplus light bounces around. But so do air/glass interfaces, even with...

    Re: Impressions on Nikkor M 450mm f9

The contrast of Nikkor M's is nearly as good as MC Kern Dagors. Less air/glass interfaces in both cases compared to plasmats.

    Re: Impressions on Nikkor M 450mm f9

There's any easy way to solve this. Just survey those photographers who also happen to be pirates. They often have one eye patched.

Here's how I use mine: 100mm strictly for 6X9 roll film holders, never for 4X5. 200 & 300 for 4x5; never for 8X10. The 300 would be great for 5x7 too, I imagine. Given these restriction, these...

  40. Re: Fuji lens aficionados: CM-W 125mm f/5.6 vs APO Symmar-S 120mm L-75

I'd rather have (and do own) the smaller 125 with a 52mm thread, and if necessary on rare occasions use a step-up ring than be forced to carry 67mm filters for the CMW, which is bulkier to begin...
