    Re: Absurdly huge files

quality of scan matters. otherwise "resolution" is often an empty word only.

    Re: Large Format Landscapes

Very impressive shots, but noisy and "digital" scans.

Re: Is 8x10 worth the trouble???

personally I found out that the 11x14" format is really something special: transportability + amazing spatiality and 3d look (even much more than the 8x10" format)
  6. Re: Drum Scanners/High End Scanners: An intro

    Re: Large Format Landscapes

Sorry Lenny, but I don't like those color scans - too saturated, a lot of magenta, violet, shadows completely closed.

    Your BW scans look better.

Re: Ektar vs New Porta 160

anyway Portra is more neutral and has wider latitude, and a natural saturation

Re: Ilfochrome discontinued, what do I do now?

I could scan a 35mm Velvia taken with a Apo Summicron asph. 90mm M on a tripod, of course.....

My goal was to show the possibility to completely restore a damaged negative, the smoothness of...
  10. Re: Who does large format processing in Italy?

    For BW I totally agree.
De Stefanis is the best BW lab in Milan.

Re: Making a New Modern Drum Scanner

    Hi Peter, how you doing?

I'm marco, I contacted you approximately 1 year ago about the Screen Cezanne...do you remember?
  12. Re: Drum Scanners/High End Scanners: An intro

I use a Dainippon Screen 8060 Mark II, Dainippon's last flagship drum scanner:

  13. Re: Dainippon Screen SG-737 vs Linotype Chromagraph S3300 drum scanner comparison

Forget them, they were excellent scanners in their days but limited to 8 bits.

To scan color negs a 16 bit drum scanner is needed.

    I use a Dainippon Screen 8060 (16 bit), Dainippon's last...

    dear digiphobes,

about "loss of detail", take a look here:

It's a Massimo Vitali's dyptich scanned and restored by me and printed at Grieger Lab, Dusseldorf, from 11x14" color negatives:

Re: Hybrid Film and Digital - Your Approach?

The hybrid system allows the highest quality of control+quality, especially shooting LF and ULF and scanning on an excellent drum scanner.

    Re: Neg vs Chrome 4x5

    Slides are certainly much easier to scan, but color negs allow much more control (much wider latitude - lower contrast, more neutral colors etc...);

Generally I would prefer slides only for art...

  20. Re: Drum Scanner - Actual Costs (purchase and annualized)?

Re: Ektar vs New Porta 160

Portra is certainly easier to scan, more natural, more balanced.

But Ektar can be a cheaper option sometimes.

Re: Which Wide Lens for 8x10

Massimo Vitali's favourite lens is the 360mm Apo Symmar, on 8x10" and 11x14".

  23. Re: Who does large format processing in Italy?

It's better to bring the film with you, in a X-RAY bag.

Lab Chrome is good too, but I prefer Colorzenith.
  24. Re: 4x5 scans.. drum or virtual drum for 40"x50" print

That dyptich has been bought by a collector. I don't know where it will fly....

Anyway, I can swear that the print was much sharper than a direct analogue print, superb detail, perfect image...

  32. Re: Schneider 550 mm XXL Fine Art Lens, a very special lens

Protar lenses are excellent, but of course the 550 XXL provides much more modern performances, and infact it's excellent even when shooting 11x14", 12x20" or other "small" formats ;-)
