    Re: Help needed with bromoil

So I’ve got the sulphite, I’ve redone two prints, being careful with times and temps aaaaaaand - Nah.

Just as poor differentiation, in fact worse.... this inked in negative wtf! Bromoil is...

It’s definitely not banned, it is restricted. It cannot be purchased by private individuals from laboratory suppliers. It can only be supplied to a registered business and delivered to a registered...

    Re: Help needed with bromoil

Ok, that’s good. I will correct that error, increase the tanning time and do a re-run. I’ll report back to. So many of the queries about this difficulty dead end and are not very useful to those...

Jim, yes the article is great. Thank you for pointing it out.

From extensive reading today, I’ve found several posts online with my exact symptom (unfortunately no unequivocal successful end...

    Koracs - I’ve been following this post : https://blog.scienceandmediamuseum.org.uk/introduction-bromoil-process/

It says sodium sulphate for the clearing. Is that wrong?

    (1st ever) Bromoil. Off a 5x7 fomapan 400 negative.

I’ve posted a request for help on bromoil technique over on the darkroom forum if...

    Help needed with bromoil

Having a go at this technique but struggling. Done lots of research and watched plenty of videos so I kind of know what to expect, but something isn’t right.

So, got a relatively low contrast...
  10. Re: Does anyone have images of a De Vere 108 enlarger?

    Thanks Andrew and all.

    Just a wee update....

As can be seen from the dates, the tempo of this odyssey is glacial; but having said that I have good progress.

On the above suggestions I went...
  11. Re: Does anyone have images of a De Vere 108 enlarger?

Thanks Greg. Same safelight (Paterson) for years, but yes, will do.

I’ll double check for darkroom light leaks too.

  12. Re: Does anyone have images of a De Vere 108 enlarger?

Ok people what on earth am I missing or doing wrong? I’ve been at this months. I can’t get contrast!

I’m using ilford multi grade papers and chemistry, ilford below the lens filters. I have an...
  13. Re: Does anyone have images of a De Vere 108 enlarger?

The original equipment I received had a lamp house with two gigantic condenser lenses, so were lit by an incandescent bulb. My smaller De Vere 45 was cold cothode.

Don't know if the lamphouse I...
  14. Re: Does anyone have images of a De Vere 108 enlarger?

Just looked at the date on that last post..... about a year ago!

Done some faffing in the mean time. I got the cobbled up device working and did some prints, all I can say is I made some pieces of...
  15. Re: Does anyone have images of a De Vere 108 enlarger?

    Whoa, thanks Luis!

Looks not unlike what I've conjured up:

I've used the filter draw upside down with a devere 54 negative holder in an adapter plate:

Re: Frankenstein Bitsa 8x10 enlarger build

As I said, it's going to have a couple more diffuser layers directly over the negative. Can't have enough diffusion! :) Which is what I did on the 54, I just swapped out the cold cathode for the down...

Re: Frankenstein Bitsa 8x10 enlarger build

So I've pulled the old lamp house apart an put the LEDs in to where the condenser sat. Hole was perfect.

    After:

    It's just an LED downlighter, 140w 4000k. I've heard...

    Frankenstein Bitsa 8x10 enlarger build

Having scored a couple of useful parts off flea bay I've got a bit of time to start nailing them together into an upgrade from my (also fleabay sourced) Devere 54. The 54 has been good; it's allowed...
  20. Re: Does anyone have images of a De Vere 108 enlarger?

"Better get looking for some bellows". Found some!

Well, it didn't take much looking, just a quiet cogitation with a brew. The bellows are right there!

He's my plan: pick up the new lamp house,...
  21. Re: Does anyone have images of a De Vere 108 enlarger?

Thanks Randy, I'll have a search and see what you've been up to.

What your suggesting is very much what I bought the tower for, the lamp house almost got thrown to clear space. Fabricating a...
  22. Re: Does anyone have images of a De Vere 108 enlarger?

It did sell recently, it's not from a shed sale, it didn't sell for 99p. It's from a pro studio that shut down. Like many bits of old photographic kit it needs to have some thought put into it rather...
  23. Re: Does anyone have images of a De Vere 108 enlarger?

This is the casting at the top of the tower:

    180898

And this is the frame that would take the paper table bit:

    180899

And these are the independent sliders that take the lamp house and...
  24. Re: Does anyone have images of a De Vere 108 enlarger?

It works slightly differently. The 54 lifts the head as a complete unit, counter balanced. The lens focus is part of the same sub-chassis as the light house, and you have to reach up and turn a rack...
  25. Re: Does anyone have images of a De Vere 108 enlarger?

Hi Luis, no didn't get chance to ring SHD, flat out at work, but I will.

V good suggestion about pics when it's working; or maybe a build thread?

Mechanically it does what the second of you...
  26. Re: Does anyone have images of a De Vere 108 enlarger?

This looks like a baby version:
    180814

Looks like there should be a neg stage directly under the condenser, then bellows then lens stage.
  27. Re: Does anyone have images of a De Vere 108 enlarger?

Thanks for the comments ! Ancient? Lol suits me fine, my camera is 1940's lens 50's etc etc. Like Randy I fiddle, and if I wanted an easy life I'd take images with my iPhone ;)

    What I'm trying to...
  28. Does anyone have images of a De Vere 108 enlarger?

Just landed back from picking up a De Vere 108 (not 5108) enlarger tower, with a separate condenser head (plus 'spare' condenser lens).

So, now I need to fathom out if the head belongs with the...

  30. Re: Help a noob understand the exposure conundrum

Fair point, I'll bear it in mind.

I managed to squeeze some time together today to make two images. I took a meter reading and added four stops for one image and six for another, based on nodda's...
  31. Re: Help a noob understand the exposure conundrum

I have revisited all the advice, especially the light leaks; I concluded that I could fight another 5x7 holder together or, seeing as I was near the end of the pack of film, go to 4x5.

    I had one...
  32. Re: Help a noob understand the exposure conundrum

but there is still summut else. And yes absolutely, fog sounds right but what causes it?...

She was looking to my left in real life. Neg is in right way round then?

Holder goes in from top of camera. I believe I put the film in so the notches are at the bottom hinge portion of...
  37. Re: Help a noob understand the exposure conundrum

Ok, lets go back to check the film base way round. Maybe I can put it to bed yes I've put it in right or no I've screwed up. I've looked at the negs and I know the subject was looking to MY left when...
  38. Re: Help a noob understand the exposure conundrum

Immediately. I can see them start to move off max 6.8. I can see them past the 'mask' near the rear element. It's like an uninterrupted tunnel, all the projections - lens iris, mask, shutter iris all...
  39. Re: Help a noob understand the exposure conundrum

    169234
This is the lens/adapter/shutter configuration. The lens has the mount thread just behind the iris, about a third the way along the barrel, hence the long adapter otherwise the lense would...
  40. Re: Help a noob understand the exposure conundrum

Now I understand why the light intensity doesn't change between formats. Thank you koraks succinctly and clearly described.
