    Most bulb flash units consisted of a battery, a resistor, a capacitor and the flash bulb all in series in a loop. Pushing in the flashbulb completed the circuit and started charging the capacitor....

    And note that US fuel is a lot cheaper than most of the rest of the world. Almost half the UK cost.

    It would be much easier to get a consistent reflectance than with a printed grey colour and a greater percentage of light...

    Washing out is only half of the process. It needs re-lubricating in all the right places otherwise when dried out, it will jam up again as you have found out.
