GPS - Just for the record, I have found the customer service Hugo has provided to be above and beyond at every step of the way. If only other business provided such great service as Hugo.

Thank you both! I think I've made a decision :)
Tempting!
However it's not like the standard screen isn't already pricey http://www.runemasterstudios.com/graemlins/images/doh.gif
Would love to hear a comparison or two from photographers...
Thanks, P. What focal lengths are you using?
Appreciate any opinions about the Maxwll HI-LUX Brilliant Matte 4.7 vs HI-LUX Ultra Brilliant Matte 4.7
TIA!
Aside from theory... let's address actuality.

I don't believe American black walnut is...
There is now concern over the use of Teak if it is certified. Just because certified sustainable grown teak is produced does not mean forests are not being harvested as well. One needs to get...
I was able to get the same (sharp focus) result by just removing the fresnel. Though I am now looking to replace the entire GG with either an Ebony or a Maxwell.
Steve,
Keep in mind, user experience (joy) is also an important part of what we do - aside from focus.
Matt, the 4x5 pictures currently on the Chamonix site feature Walnut. I have a Walnut model (possibly one of the very last), which I'm delighted.
Have you tried the Ebony WA Focusing screen?
I've only had one opportunity to focus with an Ebony. It was the regular fresnel/GG.
It was fine to my eyes.
I need a fresnel, and the Chamonix fresnel throws the focus off with WA (as has been...
Hugo told me someone had success using the Ebony focusing screen in place of the OEM Chamonix GG (without the OEM Chamonix Fresnel).
Anyone else try this successfully?
Nice! Thanks for posting.
Doesn't look half bad - accept for being twisted into a knot ;^)

I spoke with Hugo, tonight. The change from Walnut is a result of low stock on cured wood, as I suspected. Apparently they started curing teak some time ago. The next upgraded 4x5 may include more...
Lars, I was told this too. But was not given an answer as to whether there is a different model 4x5 to be offered.
Yes, I've been in communication with Hugo.
If you look at some of the links I posted previously in this thread you can see that Walnut is grown in China. However there may also be great demand...
As far as I know, the images on the site feature either Walnut Or Maple.
If they have run out of Walnut, I don't know what they plan to do when someone needs another retaining back for their Walnut...
As noted, China has a very healthy harvest of their own Walnut.
Teak is not grown in China but imported. Old growth Teak harvesting is generally illegal. Ethically I would rather not contribute to...
Hugo told me they would not be featuring Walnut again, only the lighter tone wood :(
Apparently the design may change going forward as well.
Joseph, It looks great "in the flesh"
China does produce nice walnut:

Thanks Mike. I too got that poor quality (washed out, cyan cast, lo-res) image from Hugo. Based on that image the camera looks rather plain jane (imo), next to the Walnut version. But I like woods...
According to Hugo the Chamonix rep, the company is no longer using dark Walnut wood. But has gone to a lighter colour Teak wood.
Has anyone got a Teak Chamonix 45-N1?
I'd like to see some high...
Thanks guys!
Rick was the perfect host. We met, he shared his knowledge, and insights of the camera as we played, made adjustments, and tried different lenses. Thank you again Rick...
I'd like to see and touch one first hand before pulling the trigger.
Please send a PM.
TIA!
Mark,
I'm not sure why you would need to shim the GG on the Chamonix - unless it is truly uneven and the shims are just on one or two sides for balance. On my film back the frsenel sits in a...
Mark,
Try placing the fresnel on the external GG surface and using critical focus wide open with the same night scenes, but in daylight. Use a loupe to see if the focus plane is flat on the gg....
Keep in mind, unless you are doing copy work, "accuracy" may be a subjective determination. Most gear requires some "calibration" and fine tuning. But this is often based on your own system and...

How do you print your chromes after processing?
Your numbers don't seem so far off (color) that some minor tweaks in PS would not remedy. What am I missing?
As far as the amount of light...
Mike,
Thanks for adding such a thorough test. I did not measure it in terms of mm on the camera. But did note the false focal point at about 25 feet (fresnel in place between gg & lens). This then...
Rick - Yes you got it. Sorry to hear of the hassle with the Edmund's fresnel.
Yes, a glass sandwich is what I would like too. Good luck!
Michael - Thanks for the info on different focal lengths...
Interesting, Tim. Thanks. But if one is using a loupe for critical focus with a short or long bellows how would this affect you summation?
Ian,
It's pointless to "learn to live with it" if I want sharp pictures.
I do use wides and have come to realize from reading posts here that a fresnel doesn't focus well with wide angle lenses...
David, it's no easier to focus with fresnel on one side verses the other (except for corners). The quality (sharpness) of focus I am getting now without the fresnel between lens and GG is reflected...
There seems to be a miscommunication here Ian.
Using the camera as supplied by Chamonix with fresnel installed - I had focus problems with a 90mm and 135mm lens.
Removing the fresnel lens the...
Thanks guys. Actually with the Chamonix I found the reverse. I was having trouble obtaining critical focus -especially with larger apertures- with the manufacturer supplied/installed fresnel. After...
Thanks for the responses guys.
Placing the fresnel in front of the GG (or going without) has helped with the focus.
I'm not a collector or even really into all the various camera models. To date I've used Sinar (4x5 & 8x10) Horseman 4x5, and my Chamonix 4x5. Can't recall if the first two used fresnel lenses. My...
