Thanks a lot for any...
I got my Sprinscan 45 Ultra working with new iMac with this SCSI-to-Firewire adapter: http://www.ratocsystems.com/english/products/FR1SX.html . Vuescan recognized it without any problem (as long as I...
Thanks everyone, this probably will be my next weekend project.
Louie, thank you for the idea but it is not exactly what I was looking for. let me explain this a bit better. Let's say, I shoot...
I'm relatively new to large format but enjoy it so much! One of my challenges though is an ability to compose the shot using ground glass. So I was wondering if it would be possible to make something...
I chose iMac. The screen is big, bright and crystal clear. The calibration process was very easy, and colors match well with my output. I have an old scsi scanner and I was able to connect it to iMac...
I use...my imac monitor. I just set the brightness to the maximum, start a browser or text editor, open it to the full screen and voila! I have pretty bright and even light box. Works perfectly for...
I didn't go very deep into details but it seems to me like under the hood Drobo is just a RAID device that connects to your machine via USB. Looks somewhat overpriced for what it really does. I...
Probably a stupid and FAQ but anyway. All my lenses have shutters with maximum of 1 second exposure. I'm wondering if there's a better technique for measuring 2, 3, 4 seconds, etc., well, other than...
Not much to brag about, but here are some:
1) The Castle, Capitol Reef park, Toyo/Omega View 45E, Graphlex Optar 135 at f/22, Velvia 100
2) Lassen Volcanic Natl Park, Wista 45DXII, Ilex Caltar...
I own a SS45Ultra and generally I'm happy with it. As mentioned above, it's SCSI, so I can't scan directly to my iMac. I got old PC with SCSI card and I transfer scans to iMac via network.
Optical...
I'm planning a 2-week trip to Equador at the end of March, with my digital Canon SLR and 4x5 with some Velvia in Quickloads. A good friend of mine lives there but she doesn't shoot LF yet ;) So any...
Hmm, I just checked the Pantone web site, seems like they don't make inks for 3800 yet. In fact, I haven't seen any 3rd party inks for 3800. Wondering if it's because original Epson inks are that...
3800 is amazing machine! I actually own it and do something like 2-3 prints a month too. I only had to clean up the head once, there was one nozzle clogged. I bought it 8 months ago and ink levels...
I just got new iMac with Leopard and I was planning to get one of those adapters to use with my Polaroid 45 Ultra scanner and vuescan. Too bad if it won't work.
Can you give us any more information?...
David,
There's always been some sort of confusion about 8 bit vs 12 bit vs 14 bit vs 16 bit etc. First of all, those numbers always come in power of 2, that is, there's no such thing as 14 bit...
Breanna,
The short answer is yes, it can be done. However, it depends on your actual website implementation and platform. The way it works is that when customer selects the image resolution, the...
Yes, I ordered from them several times. I requested custom mat openings and what I initially received was about quarter to half inch off but their customer service was very good and I got replacement...
I wish my Polaroid 45 Ultra had glass carrier...
Very good article though. Perhaps I will borrow V750 somewhere and try it.
Mikolaj,
Welcome to the exciting world of LF! :) I'm not an LF guru at all, but I'll try to answer some of your questions.
I own Wista field camera, which has design similar to Tachihara. As for...
I'm planning to visit Boston in early October and then drive to Toronto with my friends and of course my camera. I'm looking to shoot some fall colors, waterfalls, lakes etc. Any suggestions?
I'm wondering if there's a room for the second hard drive in iMacs? If not, then the only option for the separate scratch disk is FW/USB - and I'm not sure if external drive is any good for Photoshop...
Well, I'm shooting 4x5 and I prefer quickloads/readyloads, so I guess, FP4+ is not an option for me.
Ordered a box of Acros and red filter ;)
Sorry if this is an FAQ - I'm looking for comparison of Neopan Acros 100 vs TMax 100, preferably with examples. I'm interested in comaring things like grain size, exposure latitude, etc.
Thanks a...
Try this method - http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/high-pass-sharpening.shtml - or this - http://www.bythom.com/sharpening.htm#edge
Dietcookie,
Sorry, if I say something obvoius but here's my 2 cents:
1) Always scan at scanner's optical resolution. You can always resize image in Photoshop because it has much better resizing...
That's when digital comes in handy. Get a couple of 4Gb memory cards, shoot in JPEG mode and you will reach 100:1 ratio or even more :)
I'm only 15:1 because I'm not shooting for NG yet :)))
I have cable releases permanently (almost :) attached to all my lenses, saves me some time in the field. But IMHO being quick with large format is not the best thing. One of the advantages of large...
Can anyone recommend a good source for generic lens caps? I'm looking for a cap for the rear element of my Ilex Caltar, its diameter is about 56mm.
Thanks a lot!
Not sure if this is related byt my SCSI scanner is not recognized until I right-click on "My Computer" icon, select "Properties", then "Hardware" tab, press "Device Manager" button and then...
Bob,
Unfortunately most of the existing software available today does require some HTML and CSS knowledge. Perhaps the best way for you would be to use WordPress blog to publish your photos on the...
Yes, this is exactly what happens to me but I'm running Windows XP (yuck!) So I just use "Let the printer manage the colors" option. I get the pretty accurate color reproduction though so I really...
If your budget is not as tight as mine - go for Mac. Some call it religion, while some call it The System - reliable, fast and has nice gui. It is true that Apple hardware is way overpriced though....
I actually followed Eric Chan's guide http://people.csail.mit.edu/ericchan/dp/Epson3800/printworkflow.html. I selected Pro38 PLPP since I'm using Epson Premium Luster paper. I tried both Perceptual...
Doug,
Well, that's what I thought, but prints managed by printer look pretty good. If compared side by side with monitor, they look very similar.
I got my Epson 3800 last week and tried to print some BW using ABW driver. Well, b&w prints came out just perfect, very neutral tones, deep blacks, very fine details. So I tried to print some color...
Scott,
Don't scan higher, just use the native optical resolution of the scanner. Resampling algorithms of Photoshop are way better than any scanner firmware or scanning software. For example, if...
I actually use multipass mode, since my scanner doesn't support multi-sampling. Scans obtained with vuescan seem to have better shadow detail reproduction than SF. Probably this is just a perception,...
Scott, do you use Silverfast or Vuescan? I just tried Vuescan for the first time yesterday and it looks like Vuescan can get better color and detail reproduction. I only have to do minimal...
I got mine for about $400. But they are pretty rare, I check ebay periodically just out of curiosity but since I got mine about a month ago I haven't seen any of those yet.
I recently bought Polaroid 45 Ultra on ebay and I'm extremely happy with the quality of my 4x5 scans. Well, maybe it's because my other camera is Canon 10D :) Yes, some post-processing is still...
