This is good news. Shanghai film is superior to Lucky film on overall quality control, and definitely scratch free.
Hi all,
I know there might be plenty of discussions on this topic. I am using semi-stand development for all negatives 810 and smaller. But don't have a big enough tray for developing 11x14 film,...
Lucky film has been selling a batch they just produced using allegedly AGFA film. I tried their 810. There are still some scratches occasionally. I overheard their 4x5 might have some issue with the...
Hi Tim,
Mr GUO Zhihua is Lucky Film sales manager in Beijing. His email: guozhihua9696@sina.com. Good luck.

Tim,
I meant to reply to your thread. Sorry I don't visit this forum very often.
Cheers,
Aimin
No one in the company speaks English. The person visiting Thailand is going to Ko Phuket only. Let me know how to go next steps if you are interested in getting some.
I have mobile phone number of the sales representative of the company. They have never shipped overseas. But they have someone visiting Thailand this Friday. I'll check if they can speak English....
I have been shooting 8x10 and 11x14, and always contact print. The advantage of an ULF print is the impact to viewers, less so on image quality, IMO. The pain one has to go through using an ULF is...
Yes, the factory is moved and hasn't resume production. However, another film maker Lucky film has just finished a small batch, in 4x5, 810 and even 11x14. The issue for overseas users is how to get...
I also purchased a Charmonix 11x14, very nicely made and pleasant to use. When it comes to finding good lenses for the format, it took me a while now but I still need a lense long enough. The longest...
Hi all, I've been experimenting rotary developing double-sided Xray film, and not having had much success to get rid of marks on the back side. I'm using a JOBO tube. Any ideas how to eliminate the...
Thanks Jim. I'm exploring with different papers. The watercolor paper I used gave a more artistic look, but less photographic. The good thing about carbon print is we can be free from BW photo...
Thanks Sandy. All good information. I'm wasting glop pouring 2 mm :(
I noticed when using different paper, I needed to expose a bit more. Or is it because I left the sensitized tissue 30 minutes...
Jim, I can't agree more. While I can play with the big cameras I just enjoy the days. The first 11x14 I bought is all metal, and the beast is almost 40 pounds. It's tricky to mount it to the tripod...
Thanks Andrew. This is the way to go.
I started carbon about two years ago. Now I came to understand better the things between pigment load, exposure, negative DR, and others. I like carbon prints...
Thanks. RH at my home is around 40 to 50 in winter time. I pour 2.5mm thick when wet, maybe too thick?
Jim,
14x17 is a beautiful size. The biggest camera I have is 11x14. Once I got to bigger than 8x10, the chances of making mistakes is many many many times more, even starting from loading the film....
Thanks Vaughn. I just finished pouring a batch this morning :) Will try out vertical.
Cheers,
Max
Thanks Michael. I remembered somewhere thymol was mentioned as antifungus stuff. I'll give it a try if I can't get the tissues dry quick enough.
Cheers,
Max
Many thanks for all the responses. Great carbon printers' community here. My home is generally pretty dry but maybe it's because the snow these couple of days. It took 4 days for the tissue to get...
I noticed some fungus on tissues I poured. I learned that Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) is good for killing off the fungus, but not sure what it does to gelatin. Is it an overkill if I added a few drops...
Thanks Randy. Now that room temperature is perfect for carbon, more to come!
Thanks for the advice. The tissue was about 6 months old, but I guess a little longer drying time after sensitizing should help. I noticed after exposure the tissue somehow stuck with the film, but...
The recent carbon print I made had white background, but pretty bad mottling. Any hint on what caused this please?
Cheers,
Max
Sorry I wouldn't be able to post an example as I shoot 11x14 and I don't have a scanner big enough. You could try the link to find out OA developer....
I developed HR-U (not sure if it is the same with UR-T) in Obsidian Aqua, 1:70 A first, and then straight to 1:70 B (75% ca. Potassium), both 5 minutes, 28C. I liked the result. But I switched to...
Yes, Shanghai in 4x5, 5x7 and 8x10 is still available on China version of eBay. They recently paused new batches but not expected to stop altogether. It is interesting to hear that Shanghai is hard...
Michael,
I have been processing 8x10 Fomopan film in Obsidian Aqua (1:750) semi-stand. I stir for the first 1.5 minutes, then let it sit for 30 minutes, and stir for 30 seconds. After another 30...
Thanks Richard. I will try the formula you posted. I had problems dissolving enough ammonium thiosulfate to get to 57% solution.
Thanks gents. A bunch of ammonium chloride is on the way!
Could someone share experience on rapid fixer? Adding ammonium chloride speed up fixing? Any side effects? Thanks.
I'm only half way through this wonderful thread. Lots of beautiful images and a wealth of info. I've been shooting X-ray for a few months. I try to control scratches and managed to get scratch free...
Sandy,
I poured another batch using 10% gelatin and tested a couple of prints. Development time is considerably shorter, 15 minutes. My prints were a bit on the dark side lacking highlight. I'll...
Thanks Andrew. Very insightful! My room temperature is around 29 C, and I poured the last batch under heavy air-con. I got a cold right away :(. But, excited to pick up carbon!
Many thanks Sandy. I actually studied your writing on coating tissue, and mentioned your name whenever I discuss carbon printing with friends. I moved to 12% gelatin when I suspected I bought a weak...
To follow up. I must have done sth. wrong in my previous prints. Now my exposure time is around 6 minutes. One more question, it takes more than 40 minutes to wash away the ink and show some image...
Thanks Andrew. I just started using in camera negatives, having got my first 8x10 camera. Will try over exposure and more development.
But my digital negatives did have a max density of around 2.0.
Thanks Jim. I figured my tissue had too much pigment. Today I poured another batch using only 8grams per liter. My tissue is 2mm thick wet. The exposure unit I use is a burner for screen printing,...
Jim, I use the commercial liquid ink for Chinese brush writing (calligraphy), 12grams per liter. My exposure unit is vacuum printer with 8 lamps set apart 2.5 inches. The lamps are 16 inches long. I...
