I'll chime in to say "thank you" to Tuan and the moderators.
What I like most about this forum, is that it is not commercial or commercialized. After more than 15 years, there is no ad for...
1. I'd like to thank the moderators for their contribution. It's a thankless job.
2. I don't agree with the moderation philosophy of the site, but I am ok with it.
3. The site seems to prefer more...
Hi Tri. Great work. You have come a long, long way my friend. One of these days I have to come for a visit and learn this process from you. Way to go, my man. Meanwhile, I try to shoot as much...
I am in MA a couple of weeks a month, usually in the Acton/Concord area, and would certainly join for a shoot or a shot.
Very sad to hear. It was a pleasure dealing with Martin; he took very good care of my Master Technika and did an excellent job camming my lenses. He was a gentleman, a gentleman of the "old world",...
I believe the late Ted Harris did just that and published the results in an article in View Camera magazine about 5 years ago. I remember visiting Ted when he was working on that article, as he...
Thanks in advance for any help.

Congratulations, Tuan !
Hats of to you. What an accomplishment.
Hope the reception is going well for you today.

can you use a 300mm at reasonable distances on the Tachihara ? I think a 240mm would be much more useful on that camera.
I am with you 100%, Brian. For these tests to be useful, there has to be a strong corelation between how a scan looks on the screen and how the resulting prints look on paper. While there certainly...
I was surprised when I found out the swing doesn't lock on my Master Technika. I wonder why Linhof decided not to have a lock on the swing.
Guys, this thread is like 8 years old.
I wonder if they are still friends. :-)
cheers,
Congratulations ! I waited for more than a year for my 8x10 Compact II, and it is an absolute delight to use. I mostly use a Fujinon 450mm C and a Docter Germinar W 240mm on it.
Cheers,
As one who has benefitted much from Ted's generous nature, experience and wisdom, both on line and in person, let me join in belatedly to wish Ted a Happy Birthday. May you have many more in good...
Mostly 8x10 (60%) and 4x5 (40%). I recently got an 11x14 to try, but progress is slow.
Cheers,
I also prefer lenses that can be folded into my Technika; it is not an absolute requirement but it sits pretty high on my priority list. I sometimes shoot in inclement conditions (snow storms,...
I just happened to have received my order a few days ago for a 8x10 camera case and a couple of lens cases. The build is excellent. I intend to use these cases along with a lightweight backpack...
That hotel key card appears to be a hoax, and urban legend.
See this 2003 USA Today article, for example.
Greg,
PM sent.
"Which parts did you find confusing? Sorry about that! I always want to learn how to write better. You (and anyone else) can send writing improvement ideas to me privately, if you prefer. It is...
Processing time depends on dilution, processing temperature and film, among other things.
Check out this Kodak web site for more info specific to D76:

Hope that helps,

I didn't think that the focus rail is geared on the Gowland, though I know some people have theirs geared after the fact; S.K. Grime offered this conversion specifically for Gowland cameras at one...
I was alluding to non camera/lens related stuff like communicating with your subjects, establishing a rapport with them, getting the right expressions, etc. Sometimes these issues dictate subject...
I am just wondering what 90mm and 210mm lenses fit (even without front lens cap) in a folded Master Technika. Anyone got any experience with this ? Thanks much in advance.

I too, trace my B&W lineage to Nick Johnson and NESOP. 5% theory and 95% practice. As I usually say, in theory, there's no difference between theory and practice. :-) This abstract of Nick's has...
My discovery of Laura McPhee was quite serendipitous; a few years ago I stumbled on her work at the lab I have been using (Color Services, Inc. in Needham). I have been a fan since. Check out...
Donald,
The lower left quarter looks "unnaturally" soft to my eyes. What gives ? Thanks,

There is also a closeout on Mountainsmith Ghost at Sierra Trading Post for $90.

That is too bad. When I last talked with Dick (shortly after he came back from Antarctica) he mentioned that there was a good chance that he will take orders for the Compact II next year. In any...
"(For 35mm) 50 mm is terrible, 85 mm is okay, and 300 mm is great (for shooting a head-and-shoulders portrait). "
I consider this one of those "inadequate rules of thumb that usually dominate this...
Tom,
Thanks much for all the efforts to accommodate so many different tastes and styles. And yes, I much prefer a more minimal look.

P.S. Mobile Alabama sounds like a cute name for...
I for one prefer the old format; the new format has way too much of dead screen space. There's hardly half the information on the screen compared to the old format: much fewer lines per screenful,...
Ted,
Thank you for your many contributions now and in the past, publicly here on the forum, and privately off-list and in person.

Real World Scanning and Halftones is the one book I would recommend among the several that I have consulted, although I do not find it as useful as the Real World Photoshop books. Perhaps this is...
I would put Real Worl Photoshop (David Blatner and Bruce Fraser). It explains how things work in Photoshop very well. There is a Photoshop CS2 version (as well as a Photoshop 7, among many others)....
>> fits in a linhof tecnica...
Do you mean that the technika can be closed with this lens in place ? Which Technika is it, and which shutter is the lens mounted on? That would be exciting news...
There are 3 fresnel configurations I know of:
1. Some fresnels are meant to be used between the lens and the ground glass
2. Some are meant to be used behind the ground glass (lens, then...
"I think it's great that Christopher took the time to do these comparisons, and to share the results with us--i'm not questioning that either. "
I hasten to join you and add that I too appreciate...
